As we move through the fishing season (March to November), the insect world produces a continuous menu for trout. The most common insect is the chironomid. They are found in the lakes most of the season, especially when we have had a mild winter.
We use the following patterns along with the recommended time of year
black chironomid (size 16-18) in small lakes like Whonnock and Rolley, March until October
Silver water boatman in the small lakes (March/April and then again in the mid autumn months)
Adams dry fly (size 14-22) in the Alouette River (May to September)
Gray may fly (size 16-22) in the Alouette River. (May to September)
Trout on the Harrison and Stave Rivers will take flies imitating chironomid, dragon flies, may flies in the early and mid summer months. In the early spring, the trout eat the salmon fry. These are imitated with muddlers.
